Javelina is derived from the Spanish word for javelin or sword and is a reference to the peccary's sharp tusks. Pecary is believed to be a Tupi (Brazilian native) word meaning "many paths through the woods." The Javelina, evolved in South America and migrated north, only recently arriving in Arizona. Peccary bones are not found in Arizona archaeological sites. Coyotes and golden eagles are effective predators of juvenile javelina, also mountain lions and bobcats. Javelina are opportunistic feeders. Eating flowers, fruits, nuts, berries, bulbs, and most succulent plants. Prickly pear cactus makes up the major portion of the diet. Living in small clans, they are very communicative expressive and intelligent. Look inside to see the Jackrabbit, Lizard, Bat and Snake, while watching for the Golden Eagle.
